Color Crush ~ Decorating with Mint Green

Color Crush: Decorating with Mint

Hi everyone! I’m Sarah from Just The Bees Knees, back to share another inspiring mood board! I have a confession to make……I have a crush. On a color. And its called mint.

Oh yeah…that got your attention, didn’t it?! Drooling yet? You may be wondering where the heck I’m going here showing you a picture of ice cream when I’m supposed to be talking about a mood board! Well, today I’m going to show you a few images that have nothing to do with decorating but have everything to do with my color crush, and then share with you how they inspired me to create a color palette using mint green to design a room.

Images can really teach us a lot about how to pull together a design scheme. A perfectly designed room can have a lot of the same elements as the perfectly composed photograph. They are balanced in color, form and texture. Pinterest is the perfect place to gather inspiring images. Lets take a look at the ice cream photo again. What emotion does it evoke? (Besides hunger!) What colors besides the mint are represented? How about different textures? When I look at this photo, I feel bright and happy, reminiscent of a fun summer day. Besides the mint green, I see a darker tone represented, as well as hints of brown, pink, black and tan. The textures range from bright and shiny to soft and creamy, then a natural, rough texture is represented in the cone.

Lets take a look at few  images and draw some more inspiration from them.

I love this mint car against the rustic, neutral background. Other colors I see are warm tans and browns, mixed with grays, along with hints of yellow and Pantones color of the yearMarsala. I Like how the shininess of the car is juxtaposed with the time worn leather suitcase.

If only I could pull this skirt off! The mint looks great paired with soft taupe, cream and gold. I also spy a hint of lavender! This photo has such a sophisticated yet relaxed and airy feel to it.

How gorgeous are these vibrant coral and peach tones against the mint chair and succulents?! I love the rustic, chippy texture of the chair with little bits of the natural wood peeking through.

Mint, pink, and peach  with hints of blue equals perfection.

And one last photo showing different ranges of the green form soft mint to a more vibrant hue. Here its mixed with warm gray, a muted Marsala and vibrant pops of fuchsia. The geometric lines of the windows are contrasted with the soft feminine design in the bistro set and the organic flow of the flowers.

Now that we’ve analyzed our inspirational images and discovered what we like about them, let’s see what it looks like to  pull it all together and create a mood board for a space using the colors and textures we loved the most!

One of the first things to as yourself is, what kind of mood do I want my space to evoke? I was really drawn to the picture of the skirt, so I decided I wanted my mood board to reflect that feeling; light, breezy, and romantic yet sophisticated at the same time, so I kept that in mind when choosing the items for my mood board.

Besides using various tones of mint green from dark to light, I love the touches of soft peach, cream and  yellow chartreuse we saw in the photo of the flowers, so I used that photo for my color inspiration. The stars of the show in this office space are obviously the stunning mint seating pieces! Small doses of the accent colors deliver  just enough pops of color without overwhelming the space.

I also wanted to bring in some natural texture which is represented in many of the above photos, so I decided to add a woven basket pendant, wood desk and leather pouf.

Notice too that the pieces I chose for this board are a pleasant mix of styles. (Read all about How to mix Decor Styles here!) Drawing inspiration from the last photo, I mixed softer, romantic pieces with pieces that had a more streamlined, modern feel to it. The accessories reflect that too. The softness of the roses balance out the modern feel of the art and lucite magazine holders.

So what do you think about decorating with mint?! Do you have a major crush on a different color right now?!
